Safety at Benson Valley Landfill

At Benson Valley Landfill, keeping our community and our workers safe is the most important thing we do. Safety is a priority throughout our operations, from the very base of our Landfill’s liner to the trucks we screen as they enter our gates. We keep all visitors safe by asking them to follow these Landfill Rules and Requirements.

How We Protect The Community

  • Built Strong: Our on-site employees have over 135-years of combined waste management experience.

  • Protects Groundwater and Surface Water: Benson Valley Landfill monitors its existing waste footprint with 15 individual groundwater monitoring wells and 3 surface water monitoring points. Each of these is tested routinely for a host of chemical and physical parameters to ensure that Benson Valley keeps the environment clean. We contract with third party hydrogeologists, engineers, groundwater technicians, storm water technicians and the latest lab analysis techniques to verify that our groundwater and surface water are safe.

  • Protects the Air: Our onsite landfill gas technician routinely monitors the surface of the landfill and 105 gas wells for methane. This verifies that the landfill gas collection system is operating properly and capturing Green House Gases.  Each point is routinely inspected.

  • Overseen Continuously: Benson Valley Landfill is implementing a sophisticated data management software that will allow our operators to monitor the leachate storage system right from their smart phones. This will ensure that our personnel are informed about our infrastructure operation 24-hours a day.

  • Inspected Regularly: Benson Valley Landfill is inspected throughout the year by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet’s divisions of Air, Water, and Waste Management. The Cabinet for Health and Human Services also monitors the landfill for compliance with employee safety regulations.

  • Screened for Radiation: Benson Valley Landfill screens every load of waste for potential nuclear radiation with an industrial RadComm Radiation Detection System. This ensures that every load that enters the site is free from potential radioactive waste.
